Hi, I'm Dr. Michelle Hu.
Pediatric audiologist. Mama. Deaf myself. I built Mama Hu Hears to give families the information, tools and perspective I wish my own family had growing up. I know this world from both sides of the audiology booth, as the DHH kid and now as the audiologist sitting across from families.

My story
How I Got Here.
A few moments that shaped who I am and why I do this work the way I do.

The beginning
Identified as a Toddler
I was born with progressive hearing loss, identified as a toddler, and fit with hearing aids soon after.

The first birds
The Day the World Got Louder
I still remember the awe of hearing the robins in their nest outside our living room window for the very first time. As my hearing continued to change, I also learned how much hearing can exist in the gray. What I could hear, understand and access wasn't always as simple as an audiogram made it look.

Childhood
Growing Up DHH
I got really good at adapting. I watched faces, read body language, filled in gaps and learned how to follow conversations even when I didn't catch every word. I didn't have language then for things like listening fatigue, access or identity. I just knew how to figure things out.
It wasn't until I was older that I understood how much those experiences shaped the audiologist, advocate and parent I would become.

Two Decades Alongside Families
For two decades I have walked beside children and their caregivers in clinical settings, through evaluations, devices, school decisions, changing needs, and all the real life that happens in between.

The turn
Mama Hu Hears Is Born
During my second maternity leave I felt the pull to do more, to reach families beyond the exam room. What began as a heartfelt Instagram account grew into a community and resource for families who wanted more than what could fit into an audiology appointment.

Today
Both Sides of the Booth
I use bilateral cochlear implants and I work as a pediatric audiologist. My lived experience shapes how I show up for every family I serve, and it is what I bring to every guide, video and conversation here.

Parents are their child's most powerful advocate.
My job is to hand you the tools, the language and the reassurance to step fully into that role.

Your child is more than an audiogram.
Hearing technology, test results and appointments matter. But so do access, language, identity, friendships, listening fatigue, belonging and how your child actually experiences the world. I want to help you understand the whole child, not just their hearing levels.

Clinical knowledge belongs next to lived experience.
I bring you the audiology, but I also bring what I know from growing up DHH, using hearing technology myself and raising a family. Families deserve both.
