“What are those things on your ears?”⁣

Most of the time I’m confident regarding my hearing loss. I don’t usually care when people see or ask about my cochlear implant processors and brightly colored glittery earmolds (Not utilized for sound, they are for retention). I’ve always been an advocate for children to choose fun colors for their hearing aids, CI processors, @gearforears covers and earmolds. Not only do they make devices so much easier for parents to find when their toddlers fling them across the room but I’ve seen personalization create ownership, fun and pride. ⁣

Of course I still have my moments now and then but I’m still human. I cared on some first dates and I cared on my wedding day. I also cared when I was freshly post partum trying to make new mama friends at a noisy gathering. I wish I didn’t have to focus to listen in noise or that twinge of FOMO in fast and hysterical group conversations and I wish my ears didn’t get sore after wearing sunglasses all day from the weight in addition to my processors. Once a rare blue moon I wish I didn’t have such brightly colored earmolds or as large processors. ⁣

Does this make me vain? I don’t think so. Does caring about the zit on my face make me vain? Honestly I think that makes me quite normal in our society. Actually maybe THATS the problem, our society that we think we need to fit into. I’ve got one eyelid that folds out and one that folds under so they look like they are different sizes. Is that the end of the world? Nope. I’ve learned to apply eyeliner under my lash line instead of on top where it disappears on my right side. It’s okay, go ahead, stare and check out my eyelids 😂 ⁣

My teen/pre-teen patients love being able to vent to me since I’m able to tell them that it’s okay to wish their hearing aids or CIs were invisible - because IT IS! It’s okay to choose processors that match their hair or skin color and it’s also okay to choose bright colored stickers or decor for them as well. Nonetheless, I do hope that one day hearing aids and cochlear implants will become as commonplace as glasses.
